Why JLT is the best place to eat, work and socialise, according to lifestyle editor Alice Holtham-Pargin

6 Jun, 2025 | Alice Holtham-Pargin

The dining scene in JLT is thriving. Tucked inside each cluster, you’ll find brilliant homegrown businesses, cool cafes with lush park views, and licensed restaurants where great drinks pair perfectly with a vibrant ambience. A pioneer of homegrown brands, JLT has become a destination that, from day to night, offers something for everyone, with global cuisines and a great community feel that’s unique to this enigmatic corner of the city. For me, as a freelance editor and founder, days in JLT can mean morning meetings powered by great matcha lattes, date night dinners to dine you around the world, or catching up with my besties over drinks with a view at a vibrant rooftop.

So, come and spend the perfect day with me in JLT…

For brilliant breakfasts and creative co-working: Splendour Fields

Splendour Fields comes from Aussie Tom Arnel, the brains behind some of Dubai’s best homegrown cafes. One of three made-for-JLT concepts situated in a dedicated building at The Park, JLT’s leafy green beating heart, Splendour Fields draws inspiration from its location with garden-inspired interiors that are botanical and charming. Inside, the open kitchen creates a space that always feels warm and busy, while the alfresco terrace is (weather permitting) a glorious spot to start the day in peaceful serenity. My go-to breakfast is their smashed avo with lightly scrambled eggs and marinated cherry tomatoes, sprinkled with pickled jalapenos. But one of the best bits is the deli, tucked in its own greenhouse-style space near the entrance, where you can pick up salads, antipasti and dry store favourites.

For laidback lunches and fantastic flavours: Maiz Tacos

The husband-and-wife-owned Maiz Tacos began life as a humble taco truck in 2017. Its first permanent restaurant opened in JLT in 2019 – and while there are now two Maiz locations in the city, the original in JLT has retained its cosy, welcoming charm since day one. Its fuss-free, affordable Mexican menu is full of Maiz twists on authentic Mexican dishes – and their focus on fresh and high-quality ingredients means you can never have a bad meal at Maiz. Communal-style wooden tables create an environment made for social dining, and they’ve successfully established a loyal fan base that ensures lunchtimes here are always bustling. The birria tacos with tender beef, melted cheese, and a healthy mix of spices are a must-order.

For date nights and being transported to cosy Parisian streets: CQ Brasserie

Formerly Couqley, CQ Brasserie is a stalwart French restaurant in JLT, where you feel as much like you’re being welcomed into the home of owners Ziad and Rowan, as you are into their restaurant. Dark woods, deep reds and vintage curtains are reminiscent of a family-run Parisian bistro, and whether you dine in the bar, on the stretch of covered terrace, or in the dining room, you can expect the same transportive aesthetic. My husband and I regularly come here for an early dinner after work, always ordering the cooked-to-perfection (and brilliantly priced!) steak frites, then sharing a baked cookie laced with gooey chocolate chips. But what makes CQ special isn’t just its menu – it’s the way the team treat every guest like a returning friend.

For drinks with the girls and late-night revelry: Canary Club

Bringing something a little different to the foodie scene in JLT is Canary Club, a chic California-cool spot split over two floors. With its glass chandeliers, orange leathers and botanicals that climb the stone walls, it’s vibrant and retro. The bar at the back of the restaurant shakes up some of the best cocktails in the city, while the second-floor rooftop is a trendy and tropical spot that offers up prime JLT views. What makes Canary Club perfect for a girls’ night out is its roster of ladies’ nights, brunches and live music nights, so whenever you head here, you’re guaranteed a fun-filled evening.
